Aken: Chester Weber individueel overall winnaar, Koos de Ronde derde
The individual titles were handed out today in Aachen, after the drivers had completed the extremely challenging marathon. Reigning World Champion Boyd Exell (AUS) stood in second place after dressage and cones, and despite driving a brilliant marathon, was not able to overtake leader Chester Weber (USA). Weber, who was fourth in the marathon, was able to edge out Exell for the win. Koos de Ronde (NL) climbed from eighth to third place after a strong drive in the marathon.
De zware marathon bestond ondanks de tropische temperaturen uit acht lange hindernissen. Alleen de gemiddelde snelheid in de trajecten werd naar beneden bijgesteld. Exell realiseerde in het technische parcours van Wolgang Asendorf (GER) op vier hindernissen de snelste tijden. Hij moest in hindernis 5, de zware waterhindernis, een extra volte rijden. Desondanks streefde hij Michael Brauchle (GER), de marathonwinnaar van vorig jaar en vandaag lange tijd leider van dit onderdeel, voorbij. IJsbrand Chardon, bij aanvang van de marathon op een derde positie, had de pech in hindernis 1 zichzelf zodanig klem te rijden dat een groom moest afstappen. Chardon vervolgde de wedstrijd, zodat zijn dressuurresultaat blijft meetellen voor het landenklassement. Een individuele hoge notering zat er voor hem echter niet meer in. Koos de Ronde reed een fijne marathon, werd achtste en klom daarmee in het klassement naar een individuele derde plaats. “Het was een loodzware marathon, maar ik ben tevreden over mijn paarden. Een stuurfout in de vierde hindernis kostte teveel tijd en een balletje, maar derde in het totaalklassement in dit deelnemersveld is top,” aldus een blije De Ronde. Theo Timmerman reed een fractie snelller dan De Ronde, werd zevende in de marathon en is definitief individueel als zesde geplaatst.
József Dobrovtz jr. (HUN) en Tomas Eriksson (SWE) kiepten beiden in het staartje van de marathon in hindernis 8 om. De eerdere resultaten van deze deelnemers tellen niet meer mee voor het landenklassement.
Weber took the early lead in the competition, winning the dressage on Wednesday with a score of 36.22. A clear round in cones with only a slight time penalty and an excellent marathon solidified the win.
"Today was a big day for our team and what will be a highlight of my career," Weber posted to his Facebook page following the marathon. "We won the CHIO Aachen 2014. I am humbled to drive such a wonderful group of horses and work with such a fantastic staff and have the best sponsor in the world."
Due to the tropical temperatures, the marathon designed by Wolgang Asendorf (GER) consisting of eight long obstacles was extremely taxing. With the heat taken into consideration, the average speed in the sections was lowered. Exell had the fastest time in four obstacles but was forced to drive an extra circle in obstacle five. Even with this mistake he managed to post the fastest time, beating out Michael Brauchle (GER), marathon winner from last year who was in the lead.
József Dobrovtz jr. (HUN) en Tomas Eriksson (SWE) were both unlucky in obstacle 8 with turnovers. Without finishing the marathon, their earlier results in dressage and cones will not count towards the team competition results.
