FEI suggests changes in Driving World Championships

30-03-2011

Message from Boyd Exell, driver’s representative in the FEI Driving Committee

Dear drivers,
I would like to notify you through Hoefnet that the FEI has sent the underneath proposal for discussion to all National Federations. Please note, that this is just a proposal and that all of you are welcome to send your comments on this matter primarily to your National Federation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Background

The costs to National Federations and the shortage of Organisers is proving to be restricting.
The last World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, even though a success for Driving, also showed up a weakness for Driving, with hits current format of Four-in-Hands only.
Being the first WEG outside of Europe, the funds for most NF’s to participate with Four-in-Hands was limited.
Only competitors from 9 nations competed in Driving, which was not a good representation.

The FEI Driving Committee proposes the following changes:

- Each Division Championships to be held once every 4 years
- The WEG format to be changed to a team format with each Team being composed of a Four-in-Hand, a Pair and a Single (as with the Ponies). This would allow more participation from across our Driving World at the Equestrian Worlds showcase.
- Medals will be awarded to the winners of the three individual categories as well as the Team (as with the Ponies).

Proposed schedule for future Championships:

2012: Singles and Four-in-Hand
2013: Pairs and Combined Ponies
2014: WEG (Fours), Singles Championship
2015: Pairs
2016: Combined Ponies, fours
2017: Singles
2018: WEG (Combined Four-in-Hand horses, Pairs, Singles)
2019: Pairs
2020: Combined Ponies
2021: Singles
2022: WEG (Combined Teams, ponies and horses)

This will address the following issues:
- expenses to NF’s to send so many Teams every year to Championships
- current limited number of Venues willing to host Championships
- better representation at WEG of all Divisions in Combined Driving
- Also will allow Continents to hold other Championships
