In Memoriam Dr. Franz Josef Vetter

Sunday 05 August 2012

International O-judge in Driving Dr. Franz Josef Vetter (GER) passed away unexpectedly on 2 August 2012, aged 65. Vetter died as a result of a pulmonary embolism.

Franz Vetter was involved with horses and animals from very young age; his father was member of the Mounted Police. Franz finished high school with high marks and studied dentistry in Freiburg. He was already a doctor when he was 23 years old. When he was 19, he met his future wife Carola Villinger and they successfully established a dental practice in Krefeld.
Thanks to his experiences in the riding and driving sport, he was able to train his view and assessment skills for the quality of horses and their athletic performance. After several sportive successes in the driving sport at high level, he found his calling in judging driving competitions.
From the eighties, he successfully passed every test up to the highest level in judging. From 2000, he started his career as an FEI international judge and was promoted as O-judge several years later.
In 2006 he moved his dental practice to a small practice in his home so that he had more time for his demanding tasks as a Driving Judge.
Franz was very much involved in training young judges, not just the technical tools, but also to provide them with the necessary idealism and the joy to judge.
Dr. Franz Vetter was a passionate and much appreciated lecturer at FEI seminars and a qualified FEI Course Director for Driving Courses. The welfare of the horse and the love for the horse as a sportsman always played an important role in his lectures.
In the night of 2 August 2012, Dr. Franz Vetter died at his home in Jülich, Germany, in the arms of his wife, as a result of a pulmonary embolism.
Our thoughts are with his wife Carola and she has our greatest sympathy. His passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of all those who knew him.

The funeral service will take place on Wednesday 15th August at 09.00 hrs. in Jülich-Mersch (near Aachen).
