German ponies bring victory to American driver

USA’s Wendy O’Brien won the preliminary class of the Sunshine State international combined driving event in Ocala, Florida, last weekend. O’Brien owes this victory to her new ponies Ben and Francisco, which she recently bought from German top driver Steffen Abicht.

The 16-year-old German Riding Pony Ben and the 15-year-old Welsh pony Francisco took Abicht to individual gold in the pony pairs class at the World Championships in 2003 and 2005. The driver from Bad Düben won individual silver in 2007 and took home the bronze medal last year in Greven-Bockholt. Abicht was member of the invicible German team, that won the golden team medal at the World Combined Pony Driving Championships four times.

Wendy O’Brien found the ponies with help of USA’s top four-in-hand driver Chester Weber and his German trainer Michael Freund. O’Brien hopes to be able to qualify for the US squad next year at the World Championships. It is still unclear where the fifth edition of this Championship will take place.
