Aachen 2022: The cones course takes Boyd Exell to victory

The cones course really shuffled the cards in CHIO Aachen today. At the start of the day, IJsbrand Chardon was in the lead, almost 4 points ahead of Boyd Exell, the number two. Still, Boyd managed to win today's competition.

After dressage, Boyd took the lead with 33.33 penalty points. Mareike Harm and IJsbrand Chardon were then second and third respectively, with 38.85 and 38.99. In the marathon, victory was almost in sight for Koos de Ronde. He set the fastest times in obstacles 1, 2, 3 and 5 but unfortunately went down in obstacle 6. The horses immediately stopped and are unharmed. Marie de Ronde-Oudemans had to go to the hospital for a check-up and suffered a broken thumb and a sore shoulder.

Glenn Geerts managed to score the least number of penalty points in the marathon and thus took the victory. Shortly after, IJsbrand Chardon finished, with 0.99 penalty point more than Glenn. Christoph Sandmann finished third in the marathon and Boyd Exell had to settle for seventh. As a result, IJsbrand Chardon was slightly more than a ball ahead of Boyd Exell after the marathon.

Today IJsbrand suffered 12 penalty points in the cones. Boyd managed to stay double clear in both rounds. Jerome Voutaz was just a little faster than Boyd in the second lap and so won the cones. He finished in eleventh place overall. The overall victory went to Boyd Exell, followed by IJsbrand Chardon second, Christoph Sandmann third, Mareike Harm fourth, and Bram Chardon fifth.

With the results of Bram and IJsbrand, the Netherlands won the Nations Cup. With just under two points difference, Germany finished second and the Belgians followed in third place.
