Bad luck for Boyd Exell

Reigning World Champion Boyd Exell broke his right ankle at the Sandringham Horse Driving Trials this weekend. Boyd jumped off a carriage whilst it was moving and landed badly.

Boyd was in Sandringham as trainer for several competitors, amongst which USA’s Misdee Wrigley-Miller, who won the horse teams dressage on Friday and Great Britain’s Tara Wilkinson who won the Pairs Dressage on Thursday with James Miller as the runner-up.

“I broke my good leg this time,” said Boyd, who broke his left leg in 2006. “But luckily it is not my arms or hands, which I need for driving. My leg is in plaster and I am governed 6-8 weeks with crutches.“

Boyd however hopes to compete at the CHIO Aachen, which starts July 17th: “I aim to start in Aachen, but obviously my goal this year is the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon at the end of September and I hope I will be fully recovered by then.”
