Leipzig 2020: Bram Chardon superior

After a nail biting final round, Bram Chardon was the superior driver this afternoon in the World Cup competition for four-in-hands in Leipzig. Chardon jr. drove a razor sharp round, beating the until now unbeatable Boyd Exell. Koos de Ronde finished in third place.

Tactics

Brams plan for Leipzig was extremely tactical: “In the first round I wanted to give Boyd the room to finish in front of me. I didn’t want to start as the last driver in the drive-off, as up until now, every time I have it has gone wrong.” Bram did have a ball down in the first gate: “I started too sloppy and after that ball I thought to myself, ‘wake up’!. After that I almost had a ball in obstacle three, but luck happened to be with us. With this team I know that if I drive the first rounds conservatively they will really be at their best for the second round.” Bram drove a time of 140,40 seconds in the second round: “I really had the feeling that it couldn’t go any faster, my team performed brilliantly. In comparison to my team from last year I currently have two different leaders. Despite having so much potential we haven’t been able to perform at the right moment, up until today.”

With this super presentation Bram really put the pressure on last to go Boyd Exell. Exell was striving for a record time of 138,18 seconds, but at the last obstacle he had a knockdown which set the five-time World Champion back to the second place: “Bram drove spectacularly. Our times were so close the final was especially exciting for the spectators. I drove a long line in the first round so I knew that I could go even faster. I saw that I had a bit of room over on the inside of the last gate, but the ball fell on the far side, probably by a spray of sand.”

Koos de Ronde was driving in Leipzig with a wild card: “I am really happy to have gotten the chance to start here. It is important to stay in the competitive rhythm for the finale. I wasn’t crazy about the course, but my horses were in form and we are now focusing on the finale!”
